The blog has fallen by the wayside since I have returned to work. I have been working long long hours, getting home late at night, long after Chris has gone to bed. Doug has been doing the work-home life juggle, handling daycare drop off and pick up and bedtime routines. For the week last month that Doug had to travel, my mom stayed with me and took care of Chris. I am learning a lot of oncology. There is a lot to learn. Each tumor, each stage, each patient.

Yesterday was moving day. With the help of one of his coworkers, Doug got us moved to our new place. I'm back at the old place now taking clothes on hangers and other miscellaneous items that didn't make it on the truck. It's always sad leaving a place. I spent a lot of time at home this past year. More time at home than I have ever spent. This was the first house that Doug and I have lived in together. Chris grew from a 4 week old newborn to a one year old here. It's so sad looking in his little room with all of his stuff moved out, but still with his truck wall decals around the top of the room.

first week at work

Despite having had Monday off, this has been a very long first week back at work. I've been at the hospital for 14+ hours Tues-Fri, and a "short" 9.5 hour day yesterday. It's like being an intern all over again. I don't know any oncology, so I have to look everything up. I'm slow since I have had the year off. Doug has taken on all of the childcare and household responsibilities like a champ. He does both daycare drop off and pick up, and takes care of Chris's evening routine. Finally got a decent amount of sleep last night.

daycare day #1

Chris did great at his first day of daycare. Doug dropped him off (no crying), and I picked him up (happy and well rested). He apparently spent a lot of time sitting and watching the other kids. He took an hour and a half nap in the morning, which is really long for him, and an hour afternoon nap. Usually he is about a 45 minute napper. It was strange being away from him. I miss my buddy. Day #1 at daycare done!

For my last day as a stay at home mom, we took Chris on a dayhike up Waterton canyon. It was a beautiful day. Chris did well in the backpack carrier for the most part.

Chris ate a graham cracker today for the first time. He also rode in the baby seat part of a shopping cart successfully for the first time at Target. I only have two more days as a stay at home mom. I'm excited to get back to work and learn how to be an oncologist, but I am sad that I will have much less time with Chris. He has been my little buddy this year, pretty much always with me. Monday will be his first day at daycare. I have orientation activities this week. Then, we fly to Oregon for Carrie's wedding next weekend, and then I start as a Heme/Onc fellow the next week at the VA.

anniversary

We celebrated our third anniversary this week. Phyllis watched Chris for the evening, and we had a night out on the town with dinner at the Rodizio Grill followed by the Broadway musical Young Frankenstein. If you like meat and have never been to a Brazilian steakhouse, you should try one. It was slice after slice of delicious, juicy meat. It was fun to go out on a really fancy date!

one year checkup

Chris had his one year doctor's appointment today. He weighed in at 17 lb 12 oz (less than 3%), length 28.5 inches (25%), and head circumference 19.5 inches (97%). Still behind on the motor development, but Dr. Bublitz thinks he is going to be just fine. He had shots and cried, but not for very long.
